Lexus recently unveiled the 2020 GX460. The updated model now comes with more luxury and safety features including a new and comprehensive off-road package.
However, the Lexus GX460 remains a dedicated off-roader. It’s a more refined and luxurious alternative to the Jeep Wrangler but is just as capable as the Jeep and Toyota 4Runner.
The 2020 Lexus GX460 is upping the ante. We’re betting this is the last major redesign of the GX as Toyota is set to introduce the next-generation Land Cruiser in 2021.
It’s important to point out the Toyota Land Cruiser is available in two versions: short and long wheelbase. The short wheelbase LC Prado version are the backbones of the Lexus GX. On the other hand, the long wheelbase version is utilized in the Lexus LX.
Here is a list of what’s new in the 2020 Lexus GX460.
The new Lexus GX460 has a mammoth grille design
There’s no other way to describe it. Just as other luxury carmakers are trying to come up with the biggest maw in the auto industry, The Lexus GX is like saying ‘look at me!’ in a gruff yet refined manner.
The redesigned spindle grille contains a plethora of L design motifs. It gives the grille some character, but it’s mostly used to fill in the bigger surface area. In order to balance the look of the purposeful front grille, Lexus installed new headlights as well.
It gets a nicer interior
The 2020 Lexus GX460 receives a new wood and leather-trimmed steering wheel with new buttons and heating function, a new instrument panel with a sharper display, and available semi-aniline leather trim. The Premium and Luxury trim gets new gray Sapele wood and aluminum interior trim.
Previously optional safety driving aids are now standard
The new Lexus GX460 is made safer by an array of standard driving aids. Previously optional on the 2019 GX460 were lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic high beams, and a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection. But the 2020 Lexus GX includes all those as standard across the range in the Lexus Safety System+ package.
The new Lexus GX460 gets a new off-road package
Lexus is making it clear the GX is a dedicated off-roader, so it now comes with a new off-road package. This includes previously optional kit like a 360-degree camera, low-speed cruise control, a fuel tank shield, a transmission oil cooler, and a revised traction control system that alters the throttle settings based on varying pavements.
This new off-road package is designed to work in tandem with the standard Kinematic Dynamic Suspension System in the new Lexus GX. This means superior rock-crawling and off-roading prowess with enough comfort to cradle your tired soul on the way home.
The Sport Design Package adds sporty exterior trim
The Sport Design Package is available in the Premium and Luxury trim models of the 2020 Lexus GX460. With this package, you get 19-inch alloy wheels in a gunmetal finish, a more aggressive body kit, bespoke side mirror caps and lower front grille surround, a matte-black exhaust tip, and scarlet-colored taillights.
It retains the familiar V8 motor
Of course, no Land Cruiser or Lexus GX is complete without a formidable V8 engine. The 2020 Lexus GX460 retains the familiar 4.6-liter V8 engine with 301-horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. The engine is bolted to a sequential six-speed automatic powering all four wheels. The Lexus GX also has a two-speed transfer case and a Torsen limited-slip differential to handle everything from huge boulders to knee-deep mud.
The 2020 Lexus GX460 has a towing capacity of 6,500 pounds, which is the same as the outgoing model. The vehicle also comes with trailer sway control that works with the vehicle stability control for safer towing.
Lexus has yet to reveal pricing on the 2020 GX460. We reckon prices to start at $53,000 to $55,000 when it goes on sale later in the year.
