2020 Mazda CX-9 has more standard features and higher base price

The 2020 Mazda CX-9 is part of the second-generation model introduced back in 2016. And even though the 2020 CX-9 is no different from the 2019 model in terms of exterior design, it remains one of the best-looking seven-seat crossovers in our book.

Although the CX-9 doesn’t have the spacious cargo room of the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, or Subaru Ascent, it makes for it with a luxurious cabin, a comfortable ride, and the handling dynamics of a Mazda 3.

For the 2020 model year, the CX-9 receives more standard features and optional second-row captain’s chairs for the CX-9 Touring Premium Package and Grand Touring model.

The 2020 Mazda CX-9 produces more torque

Before we get to the new features, it’s worth noting the new Mazda CX-9’s turbocharged Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter four-banger is now torquier than the outgoing model. It still produces 250-horsepower using 87 octane gasoline, but the torque figures are up to 320 pound-feet when using 93 octane fuel.

The torque figure is rated at 310 pound-feet on 87 octane gasoline, which means you’ll need to fork over the extra cash in order to enjoy the full 320 pound-feet of torque. However, using higher octane juice gives you 10 pound-feet more torque than on the outgoing model.

The engine is still paired with the familiar six-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission driving the front wheels. If you need the added security of a proper all-wheel drivetrain, the CX-9 is offered with the optional i-Activ All-Wheel Drive system across all trim models – and standard in the CX-9 Signature trim.

If you choose AWD, the new CX-9 comes with new off-road traction assist feature

Replacing the traction control button is the all-new off-road traction assist feature in the 2020 CX-9. According to Mazda, this new feature is tuned to help the driver over uneven terrain. The system automatically feeds torque to the wheels with lesser traction for better control.

Combined with the standard G-Vectoring Control Plus feature, the CX-9 offers sharper handling and a sportier driving feel, unlike other cumbersome seven-seat crossovers.

Need only six seats? The CX-9 is now offered with optional second-row captain’s chairs

Choosing the CX-9 Touring Premium Package or Grand Touring trim gives you the option to fit captain’s chairs in the second row. This allows for a more luxurious riding experience in one of the best family crossovers you can buy today. With this option, second-row occupants get their own armrests and a passthrough feature to the third row.

You also get cupholders and a pair of USB charging ports located in the backside of the front center console. However, this luxury feature won’t come cheap. Mazda is demanding $2,100 more for those captain’s chairs that are included in the Touring Premium Package.

2020 Mazda CX-9 pricing and trim models

The base Mazda CX-9 Sport model starts at $33,790 for the FWD model and $35,690 for AWD. Interestingly enough, it’s up by around $1,500 compared to the 2019 model. However, the CX-9 Sport is well equipped with heated front cloth seats, a power driver’s seat with lumbar support, 18-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, heated mirrors, and automatic headlights with high beam control.

All trim models of 2020 Mazda CX-9 come standard with Mazda i-Activesense which includes radar cruise control with stop and go, smart city brake support with pedestrian detection, collision warning, lane departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

Additionally, all models receive a seven-inch infotainment screen, LED headlights and taillights, tri-zone climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, keyless entry, and a rearview camera.

The CX-9 Touring starts at $35,610 with FWD and $37,510 with AWD. You also get standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, leather-trimmed seats, power-adjustable passenger seats, a larger 9-inch touchscreen display, and two USB ports. Choosing the Touring Premium Package adds two USB ports in the third row, a power moonroof, LED fog lamps, front and rear parking sensors, and a Bose 12-speaker audio system.

Upgrading to the CX-9 Grand Touring starts at $41,450 with FWD and $43,350 with AWD. Standard features include larger 20-inch alloy wheels, a 360-degree surround-view camera, ventilated front seats, adaptive front lights, satin chrome roof rails, and a heated steering wheel.
