The oceans are abundant! Abundant with animal life, plant life and the garbage that we humans are pouring into its waters. The sad truth is that we are choking our sea creatures with the rubbish that we leave behind. In an attempt to do something about this, we have Breitling partnering with Kelly Slater’s surf wear brand, where they are using repurposed nylon waste that has been pulled out from the oceans, example – fishing nets, and using them to make Nato Straps for the Breitling Superocean Automatic 44 Outerknown.
Co-designed with Kelly Slater, the Superocean Automatic 44 Outerknown is teamed with the special ECONYL yarn Nato strap. The sporty surf wear brand has designed different color straps to go with this dive watch. Encouraging you to dive, surf or swim with the watch, the partnership between the two brands strengthens the collaboration. Using the strengths of the sustainable apparel manufacturer Outerknown (co-founded by Kelly Slater, a surfing legend) we see a great timepiece by Breitling.
The Power of the Ocean
The Breitling Superocean Automatic 44 Outerknown comes with a 44-mm stainless-steel case. What I find most interesting is the matt green dial, teamed with the green Nato strap, lume on the indices and the hint of yellow on the seconds hand, making a perfect combination . Giving it a complete military vibe, the watch is capable of taking you for a 1000-meter dive.
Using the ECONYL yarn (crafted from repurposed nylon waste), the COSC-certified chronometer dive watch is a great companion on your wrist, come rain or shine. Under the hood is a self-winding mechanical movement – the Breitling 17 Caliber, which gives you approx. 38-hours of power reserve. You will find the calendar on the dial aperture at the 3 o’clock spot.
The Design Aspect
The Superocean Automatic 44 Outerknown watch sports a screw-in steel caseback and is engraved with the Outerknown logo. The dive bezel is unidirectional and in steel and the dial is the same color as the latest Superocean styling that Breitling follows.
Along with the khaki green strap, Breitling is offering us five colors and four sizes to pick from. If you’re good with math, then you will know that it translates to 18 styles of Outerknown Econyl yarn Nato straps. Details include stainless steel buckles and DLC-coated buckles for some watches.
Breitling and Outerknown do their bit with an NGO Ocean Conservancy to bring about changes in how we deal with marine waste. The Breitling Superocean Automatic 44 Outerknown (Ref. A17367A11L1W1) is available for $4,200.
