Glashütte Original designed the PanoMaticLunar collection, with the sole purpose of showcasing the moon and stars in a very poetic way. One of the defining features of this collection is the asymmetrical dial design. The hours / minute and small seconds dial are aligned to the ‘vertical axis to the left of center.’ The Panorama Date and the stunning moon phase display is aligned to the right side. This arrangement of the display, of the dials, follows the ‘Golden Ratio.’
The new Glashütte Original PanoMaticLunar comes with a rose salmon dial and blue accents that stand out on a steel case. To be honest, the salmon color really works well with some dial designs, and this watch is one of them. For example, I really liked the way A. Lange & Sohne gave us a new version of the Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon with a pink-gold dial. Despite hosting the many functions – hours, minutes, perpetual calendar, outsize date and moon phase indication, tourbillon, flyback chronograph and power reserve indication – it all fitted in well with the pink backdrop.
The Salmon Dial Trend
It is a known fact that high-end watches mostly play it safe by bringing out dials in white, silver, black or blue colors. They seldom venture into the unconventional colors, however the salmon dial trend has been on the upswing for a while now, and the past few months we have seen how many watchmakers are coming out with limited editions in this color range.
The new PanoMaticLunar is unique because of the play of colors on the dial – the soft pink of the dial and the contrasting blue on the applied hour markers, moon phase display and sword-shaped hands. The Panorama Date showcasing white numerals on blue discs complements the opaline pink dial.
The Movement and More
To set this pink tone on the dial, the watchmakers worked on a special galvanization procedure at the in-house dial manufactory in Pforzheim, Germany. Basically, the dial is placed for a specific time in a galvanic bath under a constant electrical charge, which gives the dial its color.
The Glashütte Original PanoMaticLunar Rose Salmon Opaline Dial is a limited edition that is restricted to 50 watches. The 40mm case houses the the Calibre 90-02 automatic movement and you can get a great view of this from the sapphire glass case back. Teamed with a dark blue Louisiana alligator leather strap, the watch looks elegant and sophisticated, thanks to the color combinations.
The PanoMaticLunar comes with 42 hours of power reserve. The watch retails between $10,500 to $12,000, depending upon the bracelet you choose.
