Porsche released teaser images of the upcoming Taycan’s interior, and it made us all giddy with its 911-inspired styling. But one thing’s for sure: if you like touchscreens, the Porsche Taycan will satisfy your whims. The German carmaker is all set to unveil the 2020 Porsche Taycan in early September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. But before that, here are all the awesome details inside the Porsche Taycan EV.
The Porsche Taycan offers five touchscreens
That’s not a typo. The Porsche Taycan will come with no less than five touchscreens. The first and most obvious is a massive 16.8-inch curved display on top of the steering column, which is now the instrument panel.
It’s unlike anything we’ve seen in a modern car or electric vehicle, and it simply looks magnificent. There are touch-capacitive buttons surrounding the display which controls the ride height, headlights, stability control, and suspension settings of the vehicle.
Of course, you still get the familiar Porsche dials front and center with a digital speedometer, power meter, and two separate customizable dials flanking the central portion of the display. You can also choose from two map settings; you can either have the map in the center or turn the entire display into a navigation screen.
There’s also a 10.9-inch touchscreen in the center console to control the infotainment system. But the party piece is an optional 10.9-inch passenger display screen, which primarily houses the climate controls. Below the center touchscreen is another 8.4-inch touch panel with haptic feedback. Equipped with handwriting recognition software, this is a nice alternative to fiddly touchpads and mouse-like controllers.
Lastly, there’s also an optional 5.4-inch touchscreen display for the rear passengers if you choose the four-zone climate control system. And despite all these glass interfaces, the Porsche Taycan also features voice commands. Simply blurt out ‘Hey Porsche!’ followed by your command and the car will do the rest.
Inspired by the Porsche 911
No doubt, the Porsche Taycan’s cabin is lifted directly from the 911 – the 1963 Porsche 911, to be exact. The dashboard has the familiar two-element layout with an upper wing and narrow lower wing in the transmission tunnel. Also, worth mentioning is the omission of the cowl in the instrument panel. Porsche said the 16.8-inch curved display has a vapor-deposited polarizing filter to prevent reflections and essentially negates the purpose of a traditional cowl.
The Taycan features electric climate vents
With Porsche being Porsche, they weren’t able to resist adding unique gadgetry inside the Taycan. One deserving of praise is the Virtual Airflow Control system. In our opinion, this feature is a two-edged sword. On one hand, having the ability to adjust the electric shutters independently is great and all, but what’s wrong with doing the darn thing manually?
Whatever the case, those electric climate vents are a welcome addition to what many say is a revolutionary electric car. After all, the Taycan has a tough job ahead of it with the Tesla Model S and Audi e-tron GT lingering in the shadows.
Sustainable Interior Materials
The materials utilized in the Taycan’s interior are a mixture of the old and new. Cowhide is the preferred choice for most surfaces, but Porsche is offering an OLEA leather option that fuses olive leaves in the tanning process. But if you don’t like the look and feel of genuine leather, the Taycan has a leather-free interior option featuring Race-Tex microfiber materials derived from recycled polyester. Also, the carpeting is constructed from recycled fiber materials as well.
Porsche Taycan Interior Trim Options
Porsche is offering the Taycan EV in four exclusive options. Buyers can choose between Black-Lime Beige, Atacama Beige, Meranti Brown, or Blackberry. The doors and center consoles can be adorned with fabric, wood, embossed aluminum, or matte carbon fiber trim. The Taycan’s interior is not strictly minimalist in terms of form factor, but it certainly stands out from other high-performance EVs.
