About twenty years ago, the world got SpongeBob SquarePants, and things have not been the same. The delightful cartoon show, not only captivated the imagination of young children, but over the 20 years, those very children have now grown up, and have refused to let their affections for him and the whole of Bikini Bottom, die down.
Cueing into the mania, for this landmark year of two decades, we have seen many celebratory gears being announced. Shoes, couches and now a watch. Matching the ‘unsinkable cheerful spirit that kept him riding high all these years’, we have the Unimatic U1-SS SpongeBob SquarePants watch.
Straight from Bikini Bottom
Made in Italy by Unimatic, what we have here is a very unique dive watch. Let’s look at the design aspect first. I think it’s clever of them to design a matte black anthracite SpongeBob SquarePants dial. The impact of black dial with black bezel, when set in contrast with a yellow color strap, is very evident.
The reason why I bring this up, is because in his natural occurring form, SpongeBob is ‘yellow’ in color. To see him executed in any other color, is not common. The black aluminum minimal insert, the Super-LumiNova BL black NL and anthracite SpongeBob portrait, open second rail and dial trims are all in sync with the general design of the watch.
Movement and More
The watch is teamed with a Sponge Yellow Nylon two-piece strap and Black heavy-duty Unimatic V shaped nylon nato strap with Black DLC brushed hardware. This has also been signed Unimatic. The watch is water resistant to 300 meters and under the dial is the automatic calibre Seiko NH35A 21600bph.
The 316 stainless steel case measures 40mm and is fitted with a 120 clicks mono-directional security bezel. The watch is covered with 2.5mm thick double domed sapphire and has a SpongeBob SquarePants blueprint caseback. Each watch is individually numbered, and limited to 50 watches. Pick it up for $750.
